Leaving

I haven't really been taking care of this place for months, and in that stretch of time I've also become cynical about a) Wikia in general and b) children being on the internet unsupervised, which I feel this wiki encourages to some degree. Seeing as getting any wiki deleted is a challenge and there aren't any other regular editors who seem interested in the day-to-day management of a wiki, I'm opting for abandonment and account deletion, after a few things are cleaned up elsewhere. Goodbye, and please don't stop creating, but maybe think twice before you put it on the internet, because the internet is forever.

Let's change the format, a.k.a. I am the dumb

Someone pointed out to me in the comments of my last blog post that I didn't have to stick to my current video format, and that was kind of a lightbulb moment. For some reason I had it in my head that my videos had to be made to fit the framework I created back before I'd even started. But I've learned and experimented and I don't think that framework is still helpful. So let's change things!

Current Planned Changes

  • Shifting focus away from describing shows to discussing shows. I know that doesn't sound like much of a difference. I'd be dropping stuff like the plot synopsis and the character descriptions in favor of mentioning just things I thought were interesting. This means...
  • Fewer clips! I'm going back to a facecam because it's a lot eas…

So, uh...

How bad would it be if I gave up on the Mermaid Hunter thing? Because I'm feeling really torn. On the one hand I feel like I've already committed to a bunch of you guys and it's cheating to just quit. On the other I just...don't watch mermaid shows for fun anymore. I can't shake the feeling that I should be prepping for my next review. Plus I hate leaving everyone hanging for literally months on end waiting for a video that frankly isn't good enough for that wait. Of course, I could fix that by making videos more often. I mean, in terms of actual labor it takes me a couple of days to make a video. I can make excuses but ultimately I do have time to make videos, and on a much quicker schedule than I currently do, I just...don't want to. The…

The Name "Mako Island"

There are tons and tons of shows that reference Mako Island either in the title or in the series. The reason is obvious: It's the magical location from H2O, the show that inspired most of these YouTube series. There's an immediate association with magic and mermaids--not to mention a higher possibility of searches running across your show if you use that kind of keyword. There is, however, a catch, something that I think most of these girls haven't thought about.

Why is it called Mako Island?

This is a Mako shark. The name comes from the Maori word Mako, which means either "shark" or "shark tooth." So, Sharky McSharkface. Anyway, it was a plot point in Season 2 that Mako Island is within spitting distance of a shark breeding ground--Cleo wen…

Mermaid Anthology Series?

So I've been watching Tales from the Crypt, and it reminded me of an idea I've had for a while. I think it'd be really cool to have a mermaid anthology series, with each episode as its own short story. You could have different people create and submit episodes to the show, and thus if one group of people were busy, the show wouldn't have to go on hiatus, it could just use someone else's episodes for a while. Plus since each cast would only have to worry about a single episode, they could put all of their effort into making it really good.

I think this could be a good chance to tell some of the really interesting stories that a lot of shows throw into their backstories. Mermaids from the past, wars between Sirens and mermaids, how magical trea…
