Google deleting inactive channels

Google recently announced that they're deleting all info - emails, docs files, images stored in the cloud, anything - off of any old accounts that have not been active in the past 2 years. This would also probably ruin any accounts that are made by logging in with that gmail. You can read more here: https://www.nytimes.com/2023/05/17/technology/gmail-inactive-accounts-deleted.html

Editing out the part I messed up: Google won't delete youtube channels with content on them YET. However, old scripts in Google Docs, images you saved or uploaded, etc that you may have will be gone - and if you'd like to preserve them, you need to log back into those accounts again.

Just like imgur deleting tons of images, and twitter getting rid of accounts that …

an update!

Hello my good old-fashioned mermaid friends, is anyone still here? I know the discord is getting more activity lately, but I wonder if anyone still roams the empty haunted halls of this site :P

Figured it'd be worth mentioning that I am in fact alive and so is my mermaid show! While the one I planned most recently has taken 3 years to get anywhere, I'm actually grateful for that procrastination and wait time, because now I am a bit of a proper adult™ and can do useful things like driving and using a computer that isn't my mom's. I also no longer live in the woods all year, so I can film with other people often, as I am in college! Oh, how time flies.

Me and Misque are still the best of friends and have been rambling about mermaids with each …

Leaving

I haven't really been taking care of this place for months, and in that stretch of time I've also become cynical about a) Wikia in general and b) children being on the internet unsupervised, which I feel this wiki encourages to some degree. Seeing as getting any wiki deleted is a challenge and there aren't any other regular editors who seem interested in the day-to-day management of a wiki, I'm opting for abandonment and account deletion, after a few things are cleaned up elsewhere. Goodbye, and please don't stop creating, but maybe think twice before you put it on the internet, because the internet is forever.

Mermaid Memes

I made some memes that are probably too specific. Niche memes are my lifeblood.

I'm probably going to add onto this pretty often.

coloring alterations are great for setting!

Lots of editing programs have way to change the coloring of your videos- the saturation, brightness, tint, temperature, etc. This is great for setting the mood or portraying the weather, but I figured out that it's also great for swim scenes!

Taking footage from a pool and editing the colors can make the water appear more natural. Using more green-ish hues for lakes and rivers is really effective, and using more navy-ish blues in different shades is great for "ocean water." You can change the brightness and darkness for how "deep" the water is supposed to be. Another thing this is helpful for is nighttime swims- you can film them during the day and then make them darker and less saturated in an editor instead of trying to fix the lighting t…

The Mermaid's Blade Discord!

I was inspired by the YouTube Mermaid Shows Discord to make a discord server specifically for my new show! It'll definitely help me keep stuff with the cast organized, but there's also channels for anyone who wants to hang out, share memes, talk about characters, etc. I even made an "alcyone's internal dialogue" bot as a joke dskfjad

Here's the link: https://discord.gg/dg4eXhu

Once you get on, you can introduce yourself in #introductions! There's a role I made for anyone from this wiki so that you guys can have the cool aquamarine-ish color on there.

The discord's gonna be more useful and fun over time, but yeah! If you wanna check it out go ahead!

Is mt opening too cliche? Do I have an overthinking problem? The answer is most likely both.

There are times I thank myself for rewriting my current project so much. Now is not one of those times. I'm really questioning my first scene. It takes place inside on of Elise's visions and is full of symbolism and foreshadowing. I worry about it being cliche. I know "it was a dream the entire time" scenes are overdone, and this could be similar to that. I'm really not sure how to set up my story in an interesting way. I've given myself a deadline to rewrite the script before I have to go back to school, otherwise I'll procrastinate for, I don't know, a couple more years maybe? Beginnings are something I haven't quite gotten right yet. Does anyone have suggestions?

I just realized I misspelled "my". That's two letters. Two! Will I ever be …

Mystery Magic Memes

I made some memes based on Mystery Magic. They might be a little hard to understand since my show doesn't technically...exist yet. Regardless, I thought I'd share them. Next I think I'll show some moodboards or art.

I made these all in one night and should probably get some sleep.

Discord or Amino?

I really wish there were more spaces for the Youtube Mermaid Shows community. I know it's a sub-community of sorts, but this is the only place I've really felt like there was a fandom for it.

And as much as I claim to be into fandom, I'm more of an observer than anything. I want to change that. I'm working on actively participating in communities I enjoy. So, ummm??? How do Amino and/ or Discord work? I've heard a lot about them, and for some people I know, those are their main outlets of sharing things they enjoy. I don't think Amino has a PC version though, so that's not an option for me. Do any of you have discord? How hard would it be for me to set something up there? Would anyone join it?
I am clueless ( as usual) and thank you for a…

What I Know about my Show So Far

I've finally decided to sit down and write a blog post about the show I want to create. It may not be totally coherent, but it's what I have to offer.

  • 1 The Title
  • 2 The Plot... Kind Of?
  • 3 Various Other Pieces of Information that Could be Important
  • 4 The Characters

I've continued calling it Mystery Magic mostly due to habit. This has been a project of mine since elementary school, so changing major aspects of it have been pretty hard for me. If you have any suggestions, I'd love to hear them.

Edit: The title is now Sirens, Prophecies, and Other Disasters.

A group of merfolk have emerged claiming themselves as sirens. These aren't actual bird-women, but people who idolize a false set of siren values. These people use a lot of bird-related symbolism. T…

Mermaid Found Footage Concept

Before I discuss the title matter, lemme just say that swimming on Friday was just as fun as I'd hoped! I also started making a mermaid scale necklace today, and I'm pretty proud of it so far! I'm also watching the mermaid episode of Gravity Falls aka the best show to ever exist. Look at Mermando . Look at my beautiful son . The true love of Mabel'slife.

Anyway, I'd like to address a few things:

I've never seen the Blair Witch Project but I really want to.

There should be more non-horror found footage content, like Earth to Echo.

Mermaids: the Body Found did not convince 8 year-old me, but it somehow convinced my grandmother who would not listen to my arguments against her.

Now imagine: a potentially terrifying found-footage film(?) about a …

Life Update! :D

What's up finfreaks?

I'm soooo happy. I CANNOT wait until tomorrow- I finally get to go swimming again! I've had a major case of what I call the mermaid fever- aka months without swimming. Cold weather is great, but also frustrating, especially since swimming is one of the very, very few types of exercise I actually enjoy. But my mom goes to a gym with an indoor pool, and I'm gonna start going there to swim! It's  also gonna be good practice for swimming in jewelry/accessories (other than the light jewelry I never take off due to tradition). I'm really glad I live in Texas, because it means that by spring break, swim season should be back until mid October - early November.

In other news, I've been completely rewatching SLM with mi madre to p…

The Basics of My Show

I love the fact that everyone has been contributing their ideas to this site lately, so I've decided to do the same. There is a good amount of information to go over, so I'll try to be as concise as possible. Feel free to ask any questions and give some feedback! I will definitely be making more in-depth posts about the world of the show, among other things.

  • 1 History
  • 2 Characters
  • 3 Episodes - Season One
    • 3.1 1. Going Under
    • 3.2 2. Midnight Swim (working title)
    • 3.3 3. Have No Fear
    • 3.4 4. Red Sky at Night
    • 3.5 5. Worth a Thousand Words
    • 3.6 6. On the Dark Side
    • 3.7 7. Let It Snow
    • 3.8 8. Ring of Fire
    • 3.9 9. Inner Light
    • 3.10 10. See No Evil
  • 4 Conclusion

I first came up with the idea in the spring of 2014. It started out as, and still kind of is, a unique premise that doesn't …

All the Information on my New Show

I am currently in the process of developing a new plot for a new and improved mermaid show. It is going to be a mix of the two different categories of mermaid shows that I have encountered, which are as follows:

Category one: "human-turned-mermaid," including such tropes as a random discovery of a cave/piece of jewelry/ etc., being the only mermaids around, the obligatory pool party episode, evil scientists, and being inspired mainly by h2o: just add water! and Secret Life of a Mermaid.

Category two: “mermaids interact with humans,” including such tropes as the ever-elusive “Mermaid Council,” magic being used through spells and items instead of just powers, a whole mermaid society existing, evil sirens, and being inspired mainly by Mako: Island o…

Branching Out

Misque is a person you'll probably come across on this wiki, and we both plan on collaborating,,, eventually. We have discussed making videos about different elements of mermaid shows, but we haven't gotten down to the actual making yet. Although this post is something that I originally thought about because of Misque’s collaboration ideas, I feel like this can kinda apply to a lot more things.

The mermaid community isn’t exactly as famous as, I don’t know, the furry community (I’m sorry, it was the first thing that came to mind), but it’s a lot bigger than the YouTube mermaid community. And yes, there is a difference. The mermaid community includes live performers, photographers, and people who just like mermaids. There are conventions and…

Let's change the format, a.k.a. I am the dumb

Someone pointed out to me in the comments of my last blog post that I didn't have to stick to my current video format, and that was kind of a lightbulb moment. For some reason I had it in my head that my videos had to be made to fit the framework I created back before I'd even started. But I've learned and experimented and I don't think that framework is still helpful. So let's change things!

Current Planned Changes

  • Shifting focus away from describing shows to discussing shows. I know that doesn't sound like much of a difference. I'd be dropping stuff like the plot synopsis and the character descriptions in favor of mentioning just things I thought were interesting. This means...
  • Fewer clips! I'm going back to a facecam because it's a lot eas…

Asking for Advice and Opinions on a Weirdly Specific Design Choice

Includes a TL;DR at the end.

Asking for feedback on this wiki without messaging specific people is like screaming at a wall expecting an answer, because there's probably not going to be a response, but you never know. Maybe you have to wait a long time, and in the future there will be talking walls (aka maybe one of you will read this and answer).

Anyway, I'm in the process of planning a new mermaid show, because I cancelled Beyond the Waves. I've come to the realization that the few people on here that I commonly talk to may not know this yet, in which case you've been informed! Yeehaw!

I'm really excited about the series, particularly the unique and less H2O-like characters that will exist in the mix. One of them is a deaf mermaid, who, des…

It's Almost Been A Decade, SLM Fans.

In a couple months, the Secret Life of a Mermaid ten-year-anniversary (for the first ep) will be here.

Time to sob violently.

Anywho, I'm going to make a large art piece to post on my instagram and tag the creators in. I'll definitely try to post some progress pics on here!

I just thought it would be interesting if we all kinda celebrated the fact that it's been a decade since the YouTube Mermaid Show phenomenon became a thing. Without SLM, it never would've gotten so popular and maybe not have even happened. It paved the way for a lot of young filmmakers, some who went on to even bigger, less fishy things.

If anyone wants to make anything for them, maybe a tribute video or whatever, I believe I have all of their instagrams so you can tag them…

So, uh...

How bad would it be if I gave up on the Mermaid Hunter thing? Because I'm feeling really torn. On the one hand I feel like I've already committed to a bunch of you guys and it's cheating to just quit. On the other I just...don't watch mermaid shows for fun anymore. I can't shake the feeling that I should be prepping for my next review. Plus I hate leaving everyone hanging for literally months on end waiting for a video that frankly isn't good enough for that wait. Of course, I could fix that by making videos more often. I mean, in terms of actual labor it takes me a couple of days to make a video. I can make excuses but ultimately I do have time to make videos, and on a much quicker schedule than I currently do, I just...don't want to. The…

Animated Mermaid Series

I've been thinking about creating my own animated series for a while, now that I've come to grips  with how I won't ever be able to make a live-action mermaid show.  I'd attempted an animated mermaid series a few years ago, armed only with the tools of MS Paint and my laptops trusty mouse pad and you can see the results of those were quite horrific

But since then I've gotten better at my art with diligent practice over the years and I'm a little more confident in my abilities. Hopefully, I'll be able to bring up enough motivation to start working on a project soon.

I might replace Beyond the Waves.

Oops.

Anywho, I had kinda lost a lot of my interest in Beyond the Waves recently. One of the reasons I had stuck around with it was out of nostalgia and my rad ideas for future seasons (GODS i still love my plotline for the runaway/abandon thing but i mean), but it was definitely leaning towards a nostalgia factor.

However, I know if I quit on mermaid shows in general I will regret it. I still have a lot of passion for the community and I miss what it used to be before becoming a little more mainstream (I quite frankly miss when Fin Fun Mermaid tails didn't immediately remind me of Disney princess challenge videos, mermaid slime clickbait content, all that annoying jazz).

I have plenty of mermaid show ideas, but I don't want them to get toss…

I Rewrote Mystery Magic Again...

I apologize in advance for the poorly-structured nature of this blog post. It's late, and I should be asleep.

I rewrote the Mystery Magic pilot recently because I couldn't find the older version in my Google Drive. I assumed this was because I co-authored the document, and my co-creator no longer shows any interest in continuing it. She never really told me she quit, though. I didn't know if she deleted what we'd previously worked on.

This was probably for the better, anyway. I was rather attached to some scenes in the previously pilot that slowed down the pacing. It took me months to get eight pages completed on the old document. In contrast, I finished ten pages of the new version in two days. I'm also more satisfied with the newer script.…

Favorite Characters

Despite the prevalence of cliché, cookie-cutter protagonists in mermaid shows, some characters stick with the audience in a resonating way. I'm drafting a video about the consistencies my favorite characters in these series share; and I would appreciate your input.

Who are your favorite characters? Why are they more distinct than others? Do you think they match the quality of the show's plot, or do they surpass it? What is this character's role? Are they a hero, villain, or somewhere in between? If you're a creator (involved in a show, or planning to be) which character is your favorite to write or perform as? Better yet, would you like an open ended conversation about any character? I'd enjoy talking about any of the characters I've w…

-Why 'Splash' is More Important than You Think

Is this a good idea?

Due to some circumstances with the cast, the actual filming of my show has been put off for longer than I would like. Despite this, I'm pretty ready to start filming something mer-related. My braces are coming off fairly soon, so most hesitations I had regarding showing my face online are handled. I didn't know what to do at first, (other than shameless self-promotion) then I remembered these Polyvore sets I made a while ago. Would anyone be interested in a series that parodies mermaid tropes, tells about news in the community (such as new shows or tails), makes top ten lists, or collaborates with shows? Do any of you have suggestions about its format or how I would go about making a show like this? Would anyone be open for collaboration? …

Another Blog Post

This will probably be fairly short, but I'm on an in-show world-building streak today. I chipped away at getting the movie script done and started writing a script for an episode. Basically: I was actually productive today.

I also was chosen to have a picture of Morgayn drawn.

The artist is Jessica Moorman, and I think she did a great job. It's almost completely accurate, and her style is very cute, in my opinion.

Wishing you all a pleasant existence,

How Parents or Parental Roles Could Add Depth to Your Show

One thing that I often find odd and strangely consistent throughout most mermaid shows is the lack of parental involvement. I'm not just talking about keeping your tail a secret from them, either. Why does no one have parents that intervene when they dash out the door for an impromptu swim session? How about when they invite someone they barely know over for a full moon sleepover? This doesn't only apply to parents in the strict sense. Aunts, uncles, grandparents, older siblings and more would realistically set up boundaries for any child they were responsible for. I know a lot of shows don't feel like including any actual adults is a possibility, and I applaud those that do involve the older people in their lives. These shows often feel m…

Eclipse Events

Today's solar eclipse personally blew me away. I hope you all stayed safe and kept your eyes well protected. Did anyone take advantage of the event mermaid show wise? I know that most eclipses are lunar, but this one dealt with the moon, too. Did it inspire you to do anything with your show? Did the eclipse live up to your expectations? Did you travel to see it in a better area? Bill Nye (the science guy) traveled to my state, so I was pretty hyped. I hope you had a good Eclipse Day,

The Name "Mako Island"

There are tons and tons of shows that reference Mako Island either in the title or in the series. The reason is obvious: It's the magical location from H2O, the show that inspired most of these YouTube series. There's an immediate association with magic and mermaids--not to mention a higher possibility of searches running across your show if you use that kind of keyword. There is, however, a catch, something that I think most of these girls haven't thought about.

Why is it called Mako Island?

This is a Mako shark. The name comes from the Maori word Mako, which means either "shark" or "shark tooth." So, Sharky McSharkface. Anyway, it was a plot point in Season 2 that Mako Island is within spitting distance of a shark breeding ground--Cleo wen…

Florence + the Machine

I've been listening to Florence + the Machine songs a lot lately, and gosh, I feel like crying from all the nostalgia she brings me. Secret Life of a Mermaid introduced me to her music , and I swear, when I close my eyes while listening to Swimming, I'm back on the old carpeted floor of my bedroom all those years ago, watching the newest ep of SLM, squealing when it's over and telling my mom everything that happened in the episode, of Blaire and her squirrels, Brenna's power-led rampages, Tess's drama, Amy's conversation with stuffed animals, Kelsey's love for school. I go back in time to when I tried to make my own intro to 'Swimming' before I even started an actual show, filmed with a laptop webcam that was  pretty much the quality of wh…

Aren't I so good at not getting attached?

Yeah right.

Anywho, I was wondering if any of you knew any shows like that I could watch? I know lots of mermaid shows, but none with the distinct flair SLM has, like the ridiculously hilarious quotes that don't seem forced, and those goofy scenes where they almost break the fourth wall or other impossible things (Amy and Kelsey breaking out into song while music plays from out of nowhere, Amy's stuffed animals magically disappearing while shes talking to them, Bill the Ball s…

Thank You So Much!

WOW.

Today I decided to check my notifications on here and I noticed something- my show is the Featured Series of the Month!

Thank you so so so much! I just ran out of my room and started dancing around the house, I am so happy about this!

I am working so hard right now on my show, its such a relief school is over but my summers are extremely busy also. I accidentally left my camera at a friend's house, but as soon as I can get it back I'll be filming again! My friend, M&M, who is going to portray Natalie Teagan, will be coming over soon so we will be able to get episode 8 up. I'm excited to be introducing a new character and a bigger, more complex plotline!

Thank you once again for my series being featured!

Fin Fun Ripoffs?

I know this is too short to be considered a normal blog post but has anyone else noticed black tails with Fin-Fun scale prints that don't have normal fins? They are popping up on mermaid shows like Tale of Tails by autumnnicolex and I'm confused. It looks like someone got a FinFun Barracuda Black tailskin, ripped off the printed fin, and added plain black fabric in the same shape, then stuck a FinFun monofin in it. I don't know if they're cheap ripoffs or...?

EDIT: Nevermind! I can't figure out how to delete this post. BUT the tails aren't FinFun print, they're actually super duper different, its just hard to tell in the particular scenes I saw. Sorry!

Power Side Effects

Most mermaid shows feature powers, or special abilities. For one thing, they spice up boring montages. They can also make way for epic battle scenes, because its easier to say someone has magical powers than to explain how a young kid can decently use a knife, bow, or their fists.

Unfortunately, powers take away from shows too. Instead of an intense, suspenseful game of cat-and-mouse with a villian, the character can just freeze them in their tracks. Instead of craftily avoiding water using wit and creativity, the character can just divert or evaporate it.

So how do you balance the awesomeness of powers with the entertaining challenges of not having them?

You limit them!

You can limit them with side effects, for one. For example, maybe if your…

Ocean Whispers Pilot Script

I have an idea for a mermaid show called Ocean Whispers, and I will probably never be able to make it. So if you are interested in using the script, please contact me! I will post more info on it soon.

Here's the description for the show:

While the Second Mystic Prophecy echoes throughout the sea, two mermaids travel to the mainland to investigate a girl named CJ, who is mysteriously connected to a whimsical fairytale that may just be more fact than fiction.

By the way, for a reference on how to properly format the script, I used this: https://www.scripted.com/writers/write-stellar-short-video-script-2

And now, for the pilot episode script:

Best of Both Worlds?

Ever since I was 7 years old, or maybe younger, I wanted to make a mermaid show.

Remember when mermaid shows were almost all the same plotline? Remember when teenie989 was our hero? Remember when pianopup210 and other mermaid shows changed the game, making plotlines more diverse?

Ah, yes. Nostalgic.

Nowadays, the classic 'normal girl turned mermaid then scientists show up' is still the dominating trope, but there are many more shows with potions and spells and bloodlines and ancestors and such than there used to be.

The storyline for my show, Beyond the Waves, was created years ago in the mind of an 8 or 9 year-old girl. She had... different ideas than I do now. But the heart of it was still the same.

Now, I'm worried asking this with too many de…

Wait a Second..

Hydrokinesis is definitely one of the most popular mermaid powers out there. Though its basis and abilities are pretty easy to understand, something has been bothering me.

Most shows trigger transformations when the characters come in contact with water. This rule also applies to merfolk with control over water. When they (inevitably) get splashed by a clumsy friend, water-gun war, or their own carelessness, these characters panic and *pop*. They expose themselves or suspiciously run off in front of their friends or family. HOLD THE SHELL PHONE!
If these characters have already learned how to control their powers, couldn't they just make the water float above where it would have splashed? So they wouldn't have to keep a co…

Mermaid Anthology Series?

So I've been watching Tales from the Crypt, and it reminded me of an idea I've had for a while. I think it'd be really cool to have a mermaid anthology series, with each episode as its own short story. You could have different people create and submit episodes to the show, and thus if one group of people were busy, the show wouldn't have to go on hiatus, it could just use someone else's episodes for a while. Plus since each cast would only have to worry about a single episode, they could put all of their effort into making it really good.

I think this could be a good chance to tell some of the really interesting stories that a lot of shows throw into their backstories. Mermaids from the past, wars between Sirens and mermaids, how magical trea…

Unpopular Opinion: The 3 Tails Movie

I've watched this movie at least four times, and it still doesn't appeal to me. There, I said it.

I won't give too much away for the people who haven't seen it, but don't go into this movie expecting to see what the trailer gives you. I can sum up the issues of this movie with several points:

-The movie does not explain anything from the original series, other than the fact that they have tails and their antagonist, Faith, is supposed to be dead, but isn't. This was not a good idea, because some people won't know that the series exists.

-Characters come and go. Someone will be introduced and never mentioned again, making it seem like the girls just wanted as many of their friends to be in this as possible.

-The classic 'kidnapped by scientis…

Ideas?

Alright, the second I created this blog post, I thought that maybe it should be in some other form. So, if someone tells me I have to put it somewhere else (a forum, etc.), then I'll happily oblige.

ONTO THE TOPIC:

Does anyone have any show recommendations for me? I'm looking for a show that isn't too heavy on plot, possibly thrown together all in one day. Quality tails would be nice, but I really don't mind. I'm basically just looking for a show where a bunch of girls tape themselves roleplaying as mermaids. The show can be cancelled or abandoned, but since I plan on watching these shows, it would help if they weren't deleted. It's a kind of odd request, but I'm going to be having a BUSY week, and these types of shows serve as my therapy.

Tone

(I almost put Tone Quality for the title of this post. My inner band nerd is oozing out.) I have yet another production problem ladies and gentleman. I was watching The Mermaid Hunt the other day, (I won't say on which show) and it brought up a problem I never realized my in production show had: tone. A script for one episode will deal with death or being emotionally numbed and drained, while another episode that's supposed to be happening at the same time, but different place, is goofy and light-hearted. I did this to kind of give the audience a break from plot heavy stories by giving them some dramatic downtime, but I don't want the tone of my show to be confusing. My question is: How do I give the audience a good balance of action and s…

Amnesia, Aging, and other things..

One of my characters in Mystery Magic,(Morgayn), can't remember her early childhood. I have had some personal experience with memory loss, and the other day, I thought of a problem that I might encounter when writing her. I don't want other characters (or viewers) to victimize her, or assume that she can't do anything on her own. Any suggestions on how not to victimize her? Another thing on my mind, in my show, some of the characters go along with Hans Christian Anderson idea that mers live to be 300 years old. I also want the characters to age with the actors, so is the best plan to only mention the expanded lifespans, or to do a sequel down the road? Thanks for your input.

Mermaid Council Stuff

This is gonna be on the rambly side, because I don't have any clear ideas, just a lot of different possibilities.

Okay, so the Mermaid Council is a fixture of a lot of mermaid shows. It's usually this distant entity with a bunch of mysterious figures who either give the mermaid main characters help, tests or punishments. They're usually represented by one person in a cloak. Since they act pretty similarly across the board, I'd like to see a little more connection between different shows.

So first off I think the Council needs a uniform. I did some doodling and I think a vest-type garment and maybe bracelets would be good, with insignias to represent all of the jobs the Council members do. It's something that can be worn over normal clothing,…
